Judicial Philosophy
Judge Tauro is the longest tenured judge in D. Mass. He has a reputation for encouraging—if not actively pushing—parties to settle. He has a number of techniques for doing so, including use of blind “best offer” cards, ordered mediation, and general arm twisting. As a result, very few cases before Judge Tauro go to full trial.
Judge Tauro is very strict about discovery. He holds parties to their disclosure requirements and expects discovery to be exchanged automatically, without need for requests for production or interrogatories. Indeed, such discovery may be “expunged” by the court if served prior to the initial scheduling conference. At the initial scheduling conference parties will be required to bring sworn statements pursuant to Local Rule 26.1(B) as well as a list of desired deponents.
